JOEL CREDITS MOVIN' OUT FOR HELPING RECOVERY

Singer/songwriter BILLY JOEL credits his work on the Broadway musical MOVIN' OUT with helping him recover from alcohol addiction last year (05).

The UPTOWN GIRL hitmaker, who spent time in the Betty Ford Centre in California to conquer his habit, was also dealing with the stress of taking legal action against his former manager and ex-brother-in-law FRANK WEBER over accounting irregularities.

Joel is bemused by the media hype surrounding his treatment, insisting addiction is inevitable for most musicians. He says, "I don't know why there was so much fuss about me going into rehab, I was like, 'Well, doesn't everybody?' "The lawsuit was a pain in the a**, that's true, but I've done really well for myself so nobody needs to worry about me. "But it's amazing how nobody in the music industry gets away clean. "It's like prizefighting - you get a shot at the title, but ultimately you always get your a** kicked and then you turn around and all the money's gone."

Billly Joel's back on the road after longest time

Tucson, Arizona Published: 03.30.2006

Billy Joel's first major solo concert tour in nearly seven years had a record-breaking start in January. The rock 'n' roll star played 11 sold-out shows at Madison Square Garden in a single run, which topped Bruce Springsteen's pervious 10-show record.

Joel is back on the road to support the November release of "My Lives." The four-CD/one-DVD box set of demos, rarities, soundtrack contributions and hit songs paints a musical portrait of Joel as a songwriter and a musician as well as a star. The box set shows the evolution of the artist whose hits "Piano Man," "We Didn't Start the Fire," "Uptown Girl," "The Longest Time," "Just the Way You Are" and countless others turned him into a five-time Grammy-winning rock legend with 100 million records sold.

Joel takes the stage again at 8 p.m. Monday at the US Airways Center (formerly America West Arena), 201 E. Jefferson St., Phoenix. Tickets are $39.50 or $75 through Ticketmaster, www.ticketmaster.com or 321-1000.

Joel has us feeling all right

Joel has us feeling all right
By Sarah Rodman
Wednesday, March 29, 2006

It’s not easy for a child to follow in a parent’s footsteps, especially when that parent is a superstar. So Alexa Ray Joel deserves a lot of credit for the manner in which she is choosing to navigate waters so thoroughly explored by her dad, Billy, the legendary ‘‘piano man.”

Instead of using her father’s name to land engagements in the white-hot spotlight of glitzy venues, Joel is paying her dues the old-fashioned way: playing weeknight gigs at small bars and clubs where her voice competes with that of patrons clustered around a television tuned to the Cartoon Network.

Which is exactly what she was doing Monday night when she slipped into Great Scott to perform in front of a sparse but mostly attentive crowd that responded supportively to 50 minutes of sparkling pop supplied by the singer, songwriter and pianist and her tight three-piece band.

There was a curious lack of boomer looky-loos in the group of 50 or so in front of the stage, which probably suited 20-year-old Joel just fine. (For the record, neither her father nor her mother, Christie Brinkley, were on hand.) However, when she does get around to releasing music, Dad’s fans should be pleased; Alexa Ray writes the kind of ear-catching songs that should appeal to all ages.

Betraying just a bit of shyness, Joel, who has Dad’s coloring and eyes with the model cheekbones of her mom, bantered a bit about her songs, making it clear that she writes them herself.

Slow-burn opener ‘‘Revolution Song” revealed a strong voice with a bluesy-soulful undercurrent and just a touch of a country lilt.

Other bright spots included the swaggering rocker ‘‘Make Me Your Own,” the dramatic Fiona Apple-esque ‘‘Resistance” and the destined-to-be-a-single ‘‘Jaded,” a crisp little pop zinger with bouncy piano lines.

Not surprisingly, Joel’s keyboard work and song structures were impeccable, conjuring everyone from Carole King to Joe Jackson to Chopin. She also displayed a knack for the elusive skill of writing a bridge or what is sometimes known as the middle eight. Her lyrics offered typical undergraduate observations about what a messy world we live in, wanting bad boys who hurt you and being in love with love.

At this early stage, Joel’s decision to go into the family business seems savvy. The girl’s got the goods to be a big shot. Dad can feel justifiably proud.

Alexa Ray Joel puts her genes to good use

By Joan Anderman, Globe Staff March 29, 2006

It was an excellent sign: the sight of Alexa Ray Joel in her pigtails and fishnets checking out the opening band between smooches with her bass-player boyfriend.

The 20-year-old daughter of pop star Billy Joel and supermodel Christie Brinkley looked like a real girl, a nice girl, albeit a girl who in so many ways, for both better and worse, drew the daddy card in the genetic lottery. Diminutive in stature, pronounced in facial features, and a natural singer of songs (miraculously, given that Kelly Osbourne is the rule and Bonnie Raitt the exception when it comes to musical celebrity offspring), Joel is tiptoeing into the family business.

Armed with no album, no team of handlers, and none of the fanfare that characteristically accompanies a rock-royalty debut, Joel brought a three-piece band and 10 songs, all but one original, to Great Scott on Monday. And while there were hardly enough patrons in the club to log a couple of dozen hits on her MySpace page, Joel, seated at her Yamaha electric piano, plowed valiantly through her 50-minute set of sturdy pop-rock tunes and contemplative singer-songwriter fare. There's nothing remotely indie or trendy about Joel. As a songwriter she's clearly absorbed the classics -- Carole King, Elton John, Billy Joel. As a singer she's quite frankly a powerhouse -- a nimble, soulful vocalist with genuine personality and a wonderfully original feel for phrasing.

As a performer, well, she's green. Joel announced each song with a stiff ''This next one is called . . ." A couple of them -- ''Far Away," most notable for its pedestrian chord changes and journal-entry lyrics, and a '50s-inflected toe-tapper that she should give to her father -- will surely be the source of a cringe in later years. But Joel's gifts are obvious despite her inexperience, and so is her intelligence. How clever to be honing her craft in small, sparsely filled rooms, for the curious few, away from the media glare. And how refreshingly novel.

Billy and Christie's Kid Shows Off Good Genes

Alexa Ray Joel performed her second show last night at The Cutting Room, and she garnered a sold-out room that included an eclectic group of well-known faces. Her mom, Christie Brinkley, came with best friend Jill Rappaport of the "Today" show. Cyndi Lauper, just back from promoting her hit album, "The Body Acoustic," brought her manager Lisa Barbaris and some friends.

Yours truly sat with up-and-coming singer Jessica Domain, wedged in between Christie and music veteran Jeff Schock. That’s when someone asked, “Isn’t that Gilbert Gottfried?” And of course, it was. To make things stranger, at the show preceding Alexa’s, the legendary actress Celeste Holm not only appeared, but sang from the stage.

Alexa Ray is 20, and she has her father’s DNA written into her fingers. She is already a pro on keyboards, and has a keen sense of melody. Her voice was distorted by an iffy sound system. But when she hit bluesier songs, all self-written, Alexa was channeling not so much Billy as a young Carole King circa 1970. Lots of record industry types shoved their way into the crowded room last night, all hoping to find a new star. The good news is, she’s here. She just needs a little time to perfect her craft in front of a less anxious and supportive audience.

Piano Man + Uptown Girl = Alexa Ray Joel!

Piano Man + Uptown Girl = Alexa Ray Joel!
Piano Girl debuts at the Cutting Room, in front of proud parents.
By Lori Fradkin

Last week, Alexa Ray Joel, on-leave NYU student and daughter of Billy Joel and Christie Brinkley, made her New York City musical debut at the Cutting Room before a standing-room-only crowd that included both parents, her piano teacher, her publicist (whom she shares with Billy), and her voice coach.

Alexa sang, played piano (backed by a three-man band), and chatted with the audience. (Sample banter: “My mom said, ‘That song is so good. It’s by Ray Charles, right?’ I said, ‘Uh, no, Mom, it’s by me.’ ”)

Brinkley sat close to the stage, bobbed to the beats, and waved her table votive like a lighter at the end, while the more subdued Piano Man kept a low profile in the back.

“I’m the luckiest mom in the world,” Brinkley gushed. “She literally came out singing. She would pop out these songs when she was 3, and I would say to Billy, ‘You should record that.’ ”

The proud papa always knew his daughter had talent. “She’s pretty much doing this on her own. She had perfect pitch as a baby,” he said. “I guess it’s genetic.”

Piano Man’s daughter (Alexa Ray) tries hand at playing

Piano Man’s daughter tries hand at playing
By Sarah Rodman
Friday, March 24, 2006

Billy Joel’s daughter, Alexa Ray, has decided to enter the family business.

The 20-year-old has put her studies at New York University on hold to embark on a career as a singer-songwriter. Monday, Joel brings her nascent musical offerings and a three-piece band to Great Scott.

Joel - whose name was immortalized in her dad’s ballad ‘‘The Downeaster ‘Alexa’ ” - has yet to release a recording or sign with a label, but reports from recent shows indicate that the apple may not have fallen too far from the tree.

In a review of a December performance at the Cutting Room in Manhattan - attended by both her dad and mom, Christie Brinkley - a reporter likened her style to ‘‘Carole King circa 1970.” In a more extensive write-up last week, the Hartford Courant said, ‘‘Joel is an unquestionably skilled singer, songwriter and piano player” and complimented the range of her 12-song set, saying she went from ‘‘Mariah Carey highs” to ‘‘the bluesy, laid-back Norah Jones thing.”

Joel acknowledges the Jones comparison as well as those to Fiona Apple on her MySpace page (www.myspace.com/alexarayjoel). She describes her sound as ‘‘pop/rock soul.”

According to her profile, Joel has been writing songs and studying piano since childhood. She credits a summer program at Berklee College of Music with helping her shed inhibitions about performance.Alexa Ray Joel plays Monday at Great Scott, Allston. Tickets are $10. Call 617-566-9014.

we’ve got some parking advice for you.

The staff at the Dome says the parking areas close to the Dome are
limited, and will likely fill up fast.

So you are better off using the University Garage on Adams Street, or
the Skytop and Manley lots.

Parking is $10 per car, and shuttle busses start running at 6 PM.

With 38,000 people coming to the show, Dome management says it could
take more than an hour to get from your car to your seat.

They suggest arriving no later than 6:30 PM, because the show will
begin promptly at 8:00 PM.
Have fun!

A dancer who said she was harassed for having large breasts and a toe injury has sued owners and managers of a Billy Joel musical for $100m (£57.2m).

Alice Alyse said she was humiliated over her increased breast size, which meant her costume needed altering, and was accused of faking a toe injury.

Alyse added she was wrongly fired from the US show Movin' Out
in February. Staff were unavailable for comment.

Joel, who wrote the music and lyrics, was not named in the case.

Alyse said her right big toe was seriously injured when she fell during a performance in Los Angeles on 23 September 2004.

She said managers falsely told her fellow cast members that she was "faking her injury and had lied" about the need to take time off to let it heal.

Several of the show's owners and managers are named in the case, including choreographer, Twyla Tharp.

Movin' Out originally ran on Broadway between 2002 and 2005 and clocked up more than 1300 performances.

The show subsequently went on tour across America and is due to tour Japan this summer.

The musical will also be launched in the UK at the Apollo Victoria Theatre in London on 28 March.

Former Fame Academy contestant and Eurovision hopeful James Fox is
taking the lead role. The show features Joel hits Uptown Girl and We Didn't
Start The Fire.

It tells the story of a group of friends torn apart when
the men have to go to war in Vietnam. It received two Tony awards in 2003 -
Tharp won best choreography and Joel won best orchestrations alongside Stuart

Joel's been away from the charts for a long, long time now but he need not worry about anyone forgetting about him. Billy Joel Reels Off Hits With Rocker's Energy

Billy Joel Reels Off Hits With Rocker's Energy
Hartford Courant - United States
... But still, even the relatively obscure songs seemed familiar when Joel performed the first of four shows Friday at the Hartford Civic Center. ...

March 11, 2006
By ERIC R. DANTON, Courant Rock Critic

Someday, scientists decoding human DNA are going to find the Billy Joel strand.

You know it's there. It has to be. His songs are so culturally prominent, so catchy and singable, that it doesn't seem at all far-fetched that they would have altered our genetic makeup so that every person in this country knows all the words to at least two of his songs. OK, maybe that's a little far-fetched.

But still, even the relatively obscure songs seemed familiar when Joel performed the first of four shows Friday at the Hartford Civic Center. The lesser-known numbers, such as "Zanzibar" and "Everybody Loves You Now," were naturally crowded out by the hits during his 28-song, 2 ½-hour show, but at least a handful of people in the capacity crowd were standing and swaying or singing along during every single number.

It's no surprise that Joel knows how to pace a show: You start slow and build. Even so, the sheer number of well-known songs he was able to backload into his set list was staggering. "Sometimes a Fantasy" led into "Pressure," which gave way to "Goodnight Saigon" (complete with helicopter sound effects and rotor-mimicking strobe lights). Next it was "Movin' Out (Anthony's Song)," then "She's Always a Woman," followed by "Keeping the Faith." There aren't many artists who can reel off hits that way, and even fewer who can perform them with the energy and enthusiasm of a rock 'n' roll convert so many years after they converted.

Joel played piano to start, jabbing rapid-fire at the keys as he and his band opened the show with "Angry Young Man." Later, he switched to electric guitar for a few songs, including "Matter of Trust," a frenetic version of "We Didn't Start the Fire" and what he
described as a "religious song" - a cover of AC/DC's "Highway to Hell," sung by
a roadie named Chainsaw. Really.

His '70s songs worked best live - they've held up better than some of his later material. But he made sure to include a variety of songs from across his career, including a stirring version of the blue-collar sea ballad "Downeaster Alexa" and the slightly acerbic "It's Still Rock and Roll to Me." Joel also displayed a sense of humor, especially about his well-documented difficulty driving cars of late. After thanking fans
early on for paying to see him, he quipped, "I need the money. You wouldn't believe how much I pay for car insurance."

Joel played 25 songs during the regular set, and then returned for a three-song encore: the rocker "Only the Good Die Young," his slice-of-life operetta "Scenes from an Italian
Restaurant" and, of course, "Piano Man."

saying: 'I drank furniture polish... It looked tastier than bleach.'

Before he drank it, Joel reportedly wrote a suicide note
that eventually became the lyrics to 'Tomorrow Is Today'.

Bordowitz detailed how Joel's friend, drummer
Jon Small, discovered the star - who has had a well documented battle with
alcoholism - passed out in his closet and rushed him to hospital.

Joel - who was once married to supermodel Christie Brinkley
- was moved to a psychiatric ward and put on suicide watch.

He later begged his manager to get him out, pleading:
'These people are really crazy.'

By Rebecca Louie, The New York Times

NEW YORK -- Billy Joel's rewritten his own theme song. The
piano will still sound like a carnival, but the microphone won't smell like a
beer. New York's beloved balladeer, who spent a month at the Betty Ford Center
for alcohol abuse last year, was bone dry when he kicked off the first of a
record-breaking 11 shows at Madison Square Garden on Monday night.

"I'm just not drinking," said the Piano Man -- who had
struggled with a love of bottles of red and bottles of white. "I don't know if I
will never have a glass of wine again for the rest of my life, but right now I
am not taking any chances.
"There was a time in my life when I was drinking
too much, and so I have stopped," Joel said. "It's an interesting concept. 'Just
don't drink.' Hmm! I never thought of that!"Though he's suffered hard knocks in
the past few years (including three car crashes that he says were booze-free),
the affable Joel isn't too hard on himself. "I was homeless when I was younger
and I was suicidal when I was 21," said Joel, who also spent two weeks in rehab
in 2002. "Anything that has happened after that is like water off a duck's
back."

In fact, he's mixing up strong confessional cocktails with a
twist of wit.

"Now, (people) ask me about sobriety," the 56-year old said,
"and I am like, God! Don't make me the poster boy for AA. I don't really know
about total sobriety -- I know a hell of a lot about drinking!

"Ultimately, I am surprised that people made just a big deal
about it. I mean I'm in rock 'n' roll. Going to rehab for people like me is like
getting your teeth cleaned."

Joel -- who's touring to promote his four-CD retrospective
boxed set "My Lives" -- has cleaned up in ticket sales in New York. He added an
11th Garden performance (and broke Bruce Springsteen's 10-show record) after the
first 10 quickly sold out. He's glad his tour is concentrated in New York and
the Northeast, allowing him to stay close to his 24-year-old wife, Katie Lee,
whom he wed in 2004.

"I don't like to be away from home a lot," said Joel, who owns
an estate on Centre Island, Long Island and a townhouse near Greenwich Village
(he just sold his six-room Tribeca loft for about $4.5 million). "I really get
homesick a lot at this time in my life."Though Katie Lee accompanies him to many
of his shows, Joel prefers his own digs. There, his professional food-wrangling
spouse whips up healthy treats made with what Joel affectionately dubs "hippie
food." Just four years older than Alexa Ray -- Joel's daughter with ex-wife
Christie Brinkley -- Katie Lee debuted this week as a reality-show host on
Bravo's culinary competition "Top Chef."

And, it's possible the couple may have a bun or two in the oven
soon -- Joel says the duo is planning on having more than one child.

"One kid would be lonely, wouldn't it?" he said.

In fact, these days, with his tour schedule at a minimum, Joel
aspires to domestic labors. "I would be as good a father as I was to Alexa,
maybe even better because I'll be home a lot more. I would kind of like to be a
house dad, actually."

He's already got two Long Island-based businesses set up so he
can be near the family. A nautical nut, Joel has a boat-building operation; his
wares sell for roughly half a million dollars apiece. He also has a
motorcycle-design company that revamps new bikes to look like old
classics.

"I ride my own motorcycles," said Joel, who boasts a collection
of 14. Poking fun at his unfortunate auto antics, he added, "People are like,
'God, the guy is bad enough on cars!' Actually, I have a better track record on
bikes than I do with cars."

With more than 100 million records sold, Joel, who also won a
Tony for the now-touring dance-adaptation of his music "Movin' Out," is still
writing material. He's not looking to record any of his work, however, choosing
to keep the compositions for himself.

"I have been a recording artist for a long time, and I have had
my say," he said. "I suppose I had a lot more ambition and a lot more arrogance
when I was younger to think what I had to say was all that important. Now I'm at
a point where I say, I've shot my mouth off enough. What I have to say is not
all that fascinating. It's time to shut up!"

Billy Joel is not the only Joel playing Philly this month. His daughter,

And you know how when an entertainer takes the stage, there may be someone
pining backstage? Maybe panting a little? In Joel's case Tuesday night, it was
his black pug, Finoula. (Sabrina, his tan pug, was home.)

Joel broke up the joint with this greeting: "Thanks for buying all the
tickets. I need the money [pause] for my car insurance. Oh, those
premiums."
