The Billy Joel musical/rock ballet Movin’ Out has announced that it will close at the Apollo Victoria earlier than previously expected, on 22 May. It had originally been booking until 17 July.

The story of Movin’ Out, which follows the lives of five friends and how they change over the course of two decades, is told entirely through dance, set to two dozen of American singer/songwriter Joel’s greatest hits performed by a live band. Among the toe-tapping tunes included in the show are We Didn’t Start The Fire, Uptown Girl, Scenes From An Italian Restaurant, River Of Dreams and For The Longest Time.

A spokesperson for the show commented: “Despite enthusiastic audiences and standing ovations most nights together with some great reviews, the producers have made the difficult decision to close the show early. Movin' Out has not attracted the level of audiences needed to sustain the production which requires two troupes of dancers.”

Among the 10-piece band that performs live for the final time on 22 May is former Fame Academy contestant and Eurovision entrant James Fox, as Pianoman.

When Movin’ Out opened on Broadway in 2002 it was nominated for eight Tony Awards, going on to win Best Choreography for Twyla Tharp – who also directs the show – and Best Orchestrations for Joel and Stuart Malina.
